Canada has a rich field of talent within the film industry; from directors working on acclaimed movies to high profile stars and skilled craftspeople behind the cameras. There is no shortage of amazing work to be seen so join us to celebrate Canadian Film at the 2nd Annual Reel Canadian Film Festival, March 26-28, 2010. The Festival was inspired by popularity of the Indie Films Fernie monthly screenings, which take place at the Historic Vogue Theatre on 2nd Ave in downtown Fernie, BC. A dedicated group of volunteers plans 8 screenings of Independent Films from around the world per year from October to April as part of the Fernie and Disctrict Arts Council's film program. Receiving an overwhelming response from the local public, the group recognized an opportunity to present an exciting weekend of film. While the IFF program screens films from around the world, it was decided that a festival dedicated to Canadian Film would be a great fit for our small community and would also attract visitors and guests who are interested in a unique chance to see what Canada has to offer. The 1st Annual Festival took place in 2009 with a selection of 4 high quality feature films plus a shorts program called 'Focus on Winnipeg' and a children's film session. The festival received incredibly positive feedback and the opening gala of 'One Week' was a sell-out success. Guest director Michael McGowan was thrilled to see such an enthusiastic crowd at his film and was an entertaining hit at the reception following the screening. The 2nd Annual Film Festival has partnered with The Arts Station and the Vogue Theatre to present a great weekend of film and will feature: - A gala presentation of a new feature film, Hot Tub Time Machine, that was filmed exclusively in Fernie and Vancouver BC. A reception next door at the Grand Central Bar will follow on opening night, Friday March 26th. - A packed schedule of events on Saturday, March 27th, including: A selection of Children's films courtesy of the National Film Board of Canada; a selection of the best shorts submitted from young Calgary film-makers in the 'Focus on Calgary' session; a special Italian themed 'Reel Italian' Directors' Dinner and film screening in an intimate setting at the Central Hotel & Mezzaluna Restaurant (not included in weekend pass;) plus 2 evening screenings of full length feature films at the Vogue Theatre. - We close on Sunday, March 28th with evening screenings of our two finale feature films at 7pm and 9pm. Having just two evening screenings on Sunday allows our visiting weekend guests the opportunity to enjoy some outdoor adventures in Fernie, whether they prefer to hit Fernie Alpine Resort, go dogsledding or just relax with a massage and check out charming 2nd Avenue, our downtown core. The Reel Canadian Film Festival strives to be environmentally friendly in all of its practices. We encourage you to stay with our accommodation partner, Park Place Lodge, just a short stroll from all of our festival venues.
